Question of the week – What challenges do immigrants encounter?
Dear parents / guardians, This week in literacy students will read an expository text, Ten Mile Day and the building of the Transcontinental Railroad. As we read we will explore the them of social justice. Students completed Module 1, Place Value and Decimal Fractions, in math and are taking the end assessment this week. Please sign up for a November student / parent / teacher conference if you have not already done so. See schedule sent home. Many thanks! Homework Club is available - Monday, Wednesday & Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00. A break and snack provided after school. Events: 4/5/6 Walk to Author visit AVI at the Latchis - Friday, Oct. 13th at 10:00. Please feel free to email or call with questions or concerns! It was lovely to see families at Open House! “Meeting Challenges” - Question of the week - How do we face personal challenges?
Dear parents / guardians, I hope everyone enjoyed a lovely weekend! In math, students are adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals! In literacy they will read a biography about Satchel Paige a talented African American baseball player around 1920-1940. A highlight of our week was when our class biked around the neighborhood! We missed reading with our buddies in first grade when we needed to leave school early due to plumbing problems. Homework Club begins - Monday, Wednesday & Thursday from 3:00 to 4:00. Students in grades 4/5/6 will walk (bus if it rains) to the Latchis to attend the Brattleboro Literary Festival on Friday, October 13th at 10:00 to see author Avi. Feel free to email or call with questions or concerns. I look forward to seeing you at Open House on Thursday, 5:30 to 6:30! Book Fair is 9-27 to 9-29! “Meeting Challenges” - Question of the week - How do people survive in the wilderness?
Dear parents / guardians, We are settling into our routines our first full week of school. We continue to talk about and notice students practicing Guiding Principles as we build a safe, respectful classroom for all. Our days are busy! In math, students in 5th grade are working hard multiplying and dividing by powers of 10, calculating metric conversions, and comparing and rounding decimals. In literacy we are reading about different types of challenges people face and how they respond to them. We began a social studies unit called “We Care” and are learning about empathy and noticing how others express different feelings. Students are reading with first graders on Friday afternoons and will soon be assigned a special buddy for the year!Have a lovely week!

Literacy Theme – Meeting Challenges – Question of the week – How can nature challenge us? Dear parents / guardians, We are busy getting use to our full school days once again. Students are working hard and are engaged in their learning! As you may know, the latest brain research reveals that hard work can grow our brains! In social studies we began a unit called “We Care.” Along with Kathryn Mason, our school counselor, we are exploring healthy vs. unhealthy relationships. We are getting to know one another and are working together to build a kind, safe, respectful, responsible, and of course fun classroom community - we are on our way! In literacy we learned new words and read and wrote about a realistic fictional story called Red Kayak, about a boy faced with using his boat and CPR skills to help in a rescue mission on a river. In math students are exploring our place value system by multiplying and dividing by powers of 10. Many thanks for getting parent surveys in! They are delight…
